Leadership Characteristic 4: Operated in her giftedness
On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us. Acts 16: 13-15
From the last two sentences of the verses we are referencing about Lydia, we can tell what her gift is: Hospitality! She had to have a big house and a staff of well-organized servants to accommodate Paul and his entourage. I have known special people who have the gift of hospitality and one super hostess explained it to me like this: “It’s not about having the nicest house, it’s more about how people feel when they are here.”
If we follow Lydia’s example, we need to know our gifts! What do you do that really brings you joy? I can do hospitality, but I am not gifted with hospitality. At the end of a Bible study, I think everyone felt welcome, but I am pooped! I am more gifted with wisdom and discernment (Solomon was my super-hero when I was a kid). When I operate in my gifts, when I help someone going through something that I have also experienced, I am super-charged! Why? Because this is how I am hard-wired! Operating in wisdom is my gift back to God, to His people, and that brings me joy. It makes me a better version of myself. It makes me a better SLOTH.
