Who mentors the mentor? In this series, I introduce you to my mentors! Today I want you to welcome my friend Tabitha Dumas, a Signature Style Expert to the blog. She is the one who keeps me from going off willy-nilly and spending too much money on trendy things that make me look like I’m trying too hard to be young. She is also my bravery buddy, and she helps me get a little bolder in my style. Here are her expert-yet-friendly words for us!

Five Tips to Dress with Confidence

Getting dressed every day should empower you to approach your day with confidence! Opening your closet in the morning, loving everything you see and putting an outfit together that you know works for your personality, your coloring and your lifestyle is one of the best ways to start your day. After assigning hundreds of Signature Colors and working with dozens of women in their closets and out shopping, here are my best tips to dress with confidence.

1. Know your best colors. Hint: it’s probably not black, gray or white!

I offer color analysis and Discover Your Signature Color if you want personal recommendations but you likely know the colors you feel best in. If not, ask a friend or loved one which colors suit you. They’re the ones that brighten your complexion and make your eyes sparkle. I can also suggest the colors that work on virtually everyone: royal blue, emerald green, true red, true coral and turquoise. Be especially aware of what you wear near your face. Even if it’s just a necklace or scarf, those colors are what people notice and what enhances your features.

2. Embrace your “majority lifestyle.”

You have to know how you dress on an everyday basis to build a wardrobe that actually works for your life. Pieces that transition between activities is ideal, like clothes that go from yoga to working from home to taking grandkids to the park vs. clothes that go from work to church to a night out with your hubby. Stop buying items for the life you wish you had or that you only wear occasionally. Use layering pieces and accessories to give your pieces more versatility.

3. Declutter and organize your wardrobe.

My Love Your Wardrobe! ebook is currently a FREE download until I update it and has step by step instructions to completely overhaul your closet. It’s worth the effort to see exactly what you have and arrange it in a way that makes putting outfits together easier. Which brings me to…

4. Inventory your wardrobe and create a color palette.

The ebook provides checklists to be sure you have the pieces necessary to build a working wardrobe. You might prefer more “athleisure” pieces or may never wear skirts so adjust accordingly. Creating a color palette means choosing three neutrals, a main color (Signature Color) plus two or three accent colors to narrow your choices. For example: gray, navy and white neutrals, coral as your Signature Color, turquoise and yellow as accents. Knowing what you have and what you need plus sticking to a color palette makes shopping so much easier and saves you time and money.

5. Shop on purpose and try secondhand.

Never shop without a list! The list should include items you actually need (like a classic white tee or a specific top to go with a certain skirt) plus “wish list” items like a fabulous spring jacket to replace the one you don’t love. Shopping secondhand is worth the effort because not only can you save money but you can find unique items to express your personality instead of being limited to what retailers tell you is “trendy.”

Bonus tip! Dress for joy.

The way we dress not only dictates our mood but it also tells people a lot about who we are. Why not wear what you love?? Only buy what truly speaks to you and dress in a way that makes YOU happy. You deserve to be comfortable in your appearance so embrace the funky shoes, the animal prints or the colorful scarves!

I hope these tips help you dress with confidence, maximize your wardrobe and express you style! If you want personalized help, visit my blog or reach out to me.
