What is a mentor? Am I a mentor? or do I need one?
A mentor is a trusted person who comes alongside either by invitation or by happenstance to help you learn, process or survive where you are till you get to the next level.
A short term friend who will listen without judgment, but always from a place of wisdom, acceptance and care.
A person who may be a few steps ahead of you and can inspire you make decisions or plan strategy to get to the next level.
An advocate who will talk you up in circles because they know more about you, your skills and talents, than others.
What a mentor is not:
A lifelong commitment, though they might turn out to be around a long time
A servant, though they may perform acts of service from time to time
A babysitter, for you or your children, although they may offer care in a pinch
Do you need a Mentor?
If you are a breathing, thinking individual, yes. You need a mentor–perhaps many! What do you have on your plate?
This is what’s on mine. I have a mentor for my writing. I have a mentor for my speaking. I have a mentor for my style. I have a mentor for my dog care. I have a friend who is older than me who mentors me for my personal adjustment to growing older–which sucks. I have a spiritual mentor too. Sometimes, I adopt short term mentorships for new projects.
What YOU have on your plate determines your need for an occasional mentor. Here are some examples:
Wives struggling in marriage
Dealing with Chronic Illness-Yours or a Family Member
Mothers of Pre-Schoolers
Single, No Kids, and Proud
Healthy Life Seekers
Essential Oil Fans
Caring for an Aging Parent
Spiritually Single Wives
Moms of a Prodigal
If you are struggling with one or many topics on this list, you need to find someone with a weather-the-storm story so they can encourage you with their silver lining. Why? Until you have your own silver lining story, theirs will give you the hope and courage to keep moving forward. Let their attitude and new normal permeate your attitude till you find your new normal.
Just like kids with new friends on the playground, let their skills help you get to the next rung up on the jungle gym!
Yes, you need a mentor. Look at the list. Pray for the topic(s) that take your breath away. Leave your topic(s) in the comments section below.
